Version 1.1 of Prisoner 84 has just passed submission so should be appearing on all iTunes App Stores over the next day or so.

The update hopefully addresses most of the main issues people were having with the game, including: a fix for the sound-related crash bug that some iPhone 4 users were experiencing during key card swipe and slider hold games; as well as including a few GUI tweaks and improvements, like a larger directional pad to hopefully make movement a lot easier.

And we are also happy to say that one of the post’s contributors (RttaM) has kindly set up a handy help thread for anyone who might still be stuck.

With our third game almost complete and nearly ready to submit to Apple, we thought we’d take this opportunity to reveal in more detail some of the unique features you can find in Prisoner 84.

One feature in particular which we’re quite proud of is the basic gib system that we have on our enemies. The system allows random parts of the body to fly off when the enemy is shot at by the player, as you can see in these screenshots…

It’s not an amazingly detailed or complex system but it does add variety to enemy encounters, as it allows you to shoot the flesh off the torso, head, arms and legs to reveal the skeleton! It can get pretty intense when you have enemies chasing after you who are each showing different degrees of damage!

About Prisoner 84

Prisoner 84 is a 3rd person action/adventure game for the iPhone and iPod touch that sees the player take control of a psychotic inmate who is attempting to escape Tryton: a maximum security offshore prison.

The game takes you on Prisoner 84′s journey as he tries to escape. It combines action and puzzles (with an emphasis on adventure game-style puzzle solving) — with lots of hidden surprises!

Everything featured in the game has been made from scratch in less than 6 months by us – mainly to see what could be achieved in as short a timescale as possible, with no budget and with no outside help whatsoever. We freely admit that in places it’s rough around the edges, but we’re still proud of what we ended up with.

We are also pleased to say that Prisoner 84 will run on 1st generation iPhones and iPod touches. This is because we’re an indie with very limited resources, and we had to get the game running on the hardware that we had at our disposal.

Features

Over 40 areas to explore

All levels realised in 3D

Combines action with fiendish puzzles!

Supports 1st generation iPhone and iPod touch (running iOS 2.2.1 and newer)

Help/FAQ…

The following section will hopefully answer any questions you may have about how to play Prisoner 84. If you have a question that isn’t answered here then please don’t hesitate to contact us, and we will be happy to answer your question and add it to this section.

Controls

If you’re already familiar with other third person action games then the controls in Prisoner 84 should be fairly straightforward. As with most third person games you control your movement with one thumb, and where you’re looking/aiming with the other.

In Prisoner 84 we have included two control schemes — as well as a left and right handed option — so we hope we have a scheme that will cater for most gamers (I have described below how to change control settings).

Firstly the left and right handed options flips the orientation of the entire user-interface. However, I am just going to describe the two control schemes in the right handed setting, so if you’re left handed then simply mirror my directions and it should make sense.

Control Type 1:

This is the recommended control type; it combines using your left thumb to control the movement of the main character together with using your right thumb to control where the main character is looking/aiming. In this control type the left thumb is digital (i.e. it behaves in the same way as a conventional d-pad) and the right thumb is analogue, which means you can drag pretty much anywhere in the bottom right hand corner of the screen to look around.

You can also run by double tapping up on the left directional pad (this is the case for both control types).

Control Type 2:

This control type changes both movement and look/aim controls to be digital.

Other On screen Controls:

The in-game HUD also consists of a few other options as indicated in the above screenshot.

Pause (allows you to pause the game and to access the in-game options menu)

Weapon Icon (displays which weapon is currently equipped, along with an ammunition counter)

Reload (this appears below the weapon icon only if you have run out of ammunition for the weapon equipped; tap it to reload)

Inventory (tap this to access your inventory)

Use (an interact icon which only appears if you are standing in front of a use-able item)

Fire (fires your weapon)

Movement (this is the d-pad to move your character; you can run by double tapping the up arrow)

Picking Up Items

The above screenshot is the pickup item screen which appears when you have found an object. You can examine the item more closely by dragging your finger across the screen to rotate it, and you can zoom in/out by pinching the screen either inwards or outwards.

Inventory Screen

The inventory screen is where all the items you have picked up appear. To see a description of an item simply tap its slot.

Weapons/Collectables Screen

This screen (accessed via the inventory by tapping the Weapons/Collectables button at the top) displays all the weapons and other collectable items that you have accumulated so far.

In this screen you can equip or holster a weapon. To equip a weapon simply tap the desired weapon icon once to select it, then a second time to equip. To holster a weapon which is already equipped, tap its slot once. You can also change your clothes in more or less the same way.

Maps

In some areas of the game you will find Information Terminals which map out the area (and in some cases the surrounding areas) that the player is in. The player’s present location is indicated by a flashing orange icon.

Options

Here is a run down of all the editable options in Prisoner 84 in case any of you were wondering what they all mean. Please note that there are two options menus: the main options which are accessible from the main menu; and the in-game options which are accessible from the pause menu.

Main Options

Control Style (allows you to change the controls between left and right handed modes)

Controls Layout (lets you choose between two control layouts, see above for more information)

Low Power Mode (this toggles between high and low res textures; by default this option is off, but if your battery level is low you can switch to Low Power Mode to use less power)

In-Game Options

Smooth Camera (toggles between a smooth and rigid camera)

Noise Filter (adjust how intense the noise filter is)

Experimental FPS Mode (allows you to change to a first person camera; available only once it has been unlocked!)
